Mitchell “Mitch” Oakes, LMSW
Practicing Since: 2020
Having a strong desire to help people with their mental health struggles, stemming from experiences both personally and with loved ones, Mitch works to instill hope that life can improve and believes mental health requires daily attention. Mitch has practiced as a counselor since 2020 and has worked with a wide range of demographics and diagnoses. He has provided services individually, in group settings including couples and families, in-person, in-home, through an interpreter, and via video.
Mitch received his Bachelor of Science in Social Work, and during this time of his undergraduate education, he worked on the Assertive Community Treatment team, primarily with adults struggling with their mental health. He also participated in the Idaho Drug & Mental Health Court, working with judges and parole officers. He completed his undergraduate internship working for a local developmental disability agency where he had the opportunity to work with children with developmental setbacks and aid them in coping and learning skills.
Mitch then received his Master’s Degree in Social Work where he specialized in clinical mental health and addictions and received a Level 1 certification from the Gottman Method Couples Therapy program. While completing his graduate degree, he worked in the case management/community-based Rehabilitation services field providing services to families and refugees. And for his clinical internship, Mitch worked for an agency providing treatment to domestic abusers and sex offenders both adult and juvenile.
Mitch’s virtual counseling experience began when he provided counseling services to a Native American reservation in Arizona. This experience showed him how effective and personable virtual counseling can be while allowing people to not meet in a formal office. And most recently, Mitch earned a certification in grief counseling and has found meaning in helping people through difficult life events or making life-altering adjustments.
In his personal time, Mitch enjoys being outside, reading, and both playing and watching sports. His favorite season is the Fall because of college football and his favorite hobby is paintball.
Mitch is licensed in the state of Maryland (#28127) and under the supervision of Daniel Heckman, LCSW-C (license #: 23153).
