Zahra M. Amber Hyman, LGPC

Practicing Since: 2016

While in Amber’s care, clients can expect a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space built on collaboration and trust emphasizing their autonomy and strengths. Sessions will take place in an atmosphere that is trauma-informed, integrating both somatic and creative therapy modalities. Some therapy treatment modalities she like to use are feminist and womanist, psychodynamic, CBT, narrative, narrative exposure, and person-centered.

Amber views mental health as deeply connected to individual experiences, relationships, and the broader social and cultural systems that influence a person’s life. It emphasizes the interplay of internal factors, such as unconscious patterns and past experiences, with external forces like systemic oppression and societal expectations. Mental health is not a fixed state but is a dynamic process of self-awareness, resilience and empowerment. The therapeutic process is collaborative and client-centered, grounded in empathy, equality, and respect for the client’s autonomy. It involves creating a safe space for exploration, undercovering underlying patterns or conflicts, and integrating traumatic or challenging experiences into a coherent life narrative. Through this process, Amber’s clients are encouraged to recognize their inherent strengths, challenge limiting beliefs, and develop the tools needed for personal growth and meaningful change.

She received her Master’s degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology with a concentration in working with minority populations. And additionally, Amber has a Master’s in Education; having taught special education for 10 years. She is trained in EMDR, certified in mental health first aid, and is currently pursuing certification as a poetry therapist.

A mom to a young girl and a young boy, in her spare time, Amber enjoys writing, open mic poetry, painting, visiting museums, and taking crafting classes such as knitting and sewing.
